When Chris Nikic crossed the finish line of the Ironman Florida in November, he also achieved another milestone: a Guinness World Record. The 21-year-old Special Olympian is the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon. The race includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run. “Ironman. Goal set and achieved,” the athlete posted. “Time to set a new and bigger goal for 2021. Whatever it is, the strategy is the same. 1% better every day.” LEARN MORE

2. Mom genes

Mom’s sugar intake may affect her baby’s DNA. New research looked at 550 expectant mothers. The study found that high glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes, which only occurs during pregnancy, spark genetic changes in the fetus. These changes could lead to poor health in childhood. Making diet and lifestyle improvements during pregnancy can lower glucose levels, and prevent the genetic changes. “All mums-to-be need access to healthy eating advice,” concludes a study collaborator. LEARN MORE

Peace and quiet may be good for your brain. A new study looked at more than 5,000 people aged 65 and older. Researchers found that those living in areas with a lot of daytime noise had 36% increased odds of mild cognitive impairment. They also had 30% increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The study could inspire interventions to reduce noise exposure for people living in loud, urban environments. LEARN MORE
